New widget for YouTube
We have installed a new widget on 15-01-2012 for YouTube: please use the new method which looks like: {{#widget:YouTube|id=iZFtKGaU2hY}}.
You first need to upload a video on to YouTube or choose a video in YouTube. If you play this video, there will be an address in the task-bar which looks like: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PI3XORPWjAQ. It is all about the eleven characters after v=, so here PI3XORPWjAQ. You fill those out in the basic widget
{{#widget:YouTube|id=xxxxxxxxxxx}} so in this case this will be {{#widget:YouTube|id=PI3XORPWjAQ}}. This will show like:
You might see an old way to embed which is still working, but please DO NOT use the old way, which WAS
<youtube>iZFtKGaU2hY</youtube>.
Embedding Vimeo
<embedurl>http://player.vimeo.com/video/21447123?title=0&byline=0&portrait=0" width="580" height="326" frameborder="0"</embedurl>
Youtube video
- Copyright
Youtube is very active at this moment with blocking millions of videos because of copyrights.
There are alternatives which cannot be embedded by the way, regretfully. You can, though, hyperlink them or embed the URL: see Help: Embed URL.
Alternatives:
If you want to see a YouTube film, first thing to do is to have the film uploaded to YouTube.
This is very well explained in this video:
So this is the first step. You can practically upload any format on to YouTube. Of course if the video is long or of high quality it will take more time to upload. After uploading, depending on the activity on YouTube it might take minutes up to half an hour. In this platform video's of a few minutes will do and high quality is not needed.
After this you can do two things:
- Of course you can just make a link to YouTube and have a film shown in a new window like this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_RcrBob4pj0
Much nicer is to use embedding: by integrating the video on your page.
- Embedding is NOT possible if you have marked photos or videos as 'private
At this moment all of this only works for YouTube, not for any other video-site!
Of course you can always make a regular link to other sites like MSN-video if you want to show something posted there: this will be a pop-up then, for instance MSN-video
Only use videos which are useful and interesting. 15 to 20 seconds will do in most cases. Embedded videos will slow down the speed of the article loaded.
A small disadvantage is that if the video is taken of YouTube (or blocked in YouTube because of copy rights for instance) it will no longer show in this platform.
- Maximum length
You are only allowed to upload very long videos! But for the game long videos are no use, we guess.
Downloading Youtube
Youtube is always trying to prevent videos from being downloaded. At this moment, though, it seems to be possible without problems with youtubedownloader. Small hick-up: videos will be saved as .mp4, not as mpeg.
Converting a video
Almost everything that you upload on to YouTube will automatically be converted to the right playable format: therefor Youtube is such an awesome and easy system. You can convert videos yourself as well on your PC from .mov to for instance .avi or .mpg.
There is free software available: Super Video Converter (25MB). You can use this to convert for free: it is not that complicated, but still.
To flip a video 90 degrees over
You can do this by using download this software (Free Video Flip & Rotate for free and instal it on your PC!
Blanks in names
Please do not use any blanks in names you use on the platform, not in articles, photo's and not in embedded files. This is one of the very few weak points in the platform software. It is thus better to write _ or - or anything else other then a blank.
The same goes for ' and as they are used differently in this software: don't use them for/in whatever names
