Welcome to the Emerald Forest Hotel!
The introduction video by the Dutch staff for your competition is available via this link. Please watch this video.
This is the homepage of your simulation in Birmingham, February 2015. This will be a pilot of the game in the UK, not everything will be 'perfect'; all your reactions are welcome. English is meant as a way of communication, and maybe not always 100% correct. In case you really see big errors on this platform, please let the Dutch coaches know.
Manage the EmeraldForestHotel
You have to manage your hotel, trying to do better then it has been done in the past. The decisions and results of last year are available as a point of reference. The hotel is located in your own country in a fictitious city called 'Amstelburg'.
You should manage the hotel by:
- making decisions on prices, investments, costs, staff, etc.;
- explaining why and how you do things;
- running your communications, website and social media in a proper way;
- live-actions during the game.
All of this is evaluated each year by the coaches, ending up in a creativity and entrepreneurship mark. These marks, together with your decisions, the activities of your competitors and some other elements like the demand in the market, lead to your (financial) results, the occupation rate of your hotel, profit / loss, financial ratio's and a complete operating review.
To get grip on things we have divided your managing the hotel in a number of tasks which you will perform in the two (fictitious) years you run the hotel.
This platform is the central point with all information on the hotel; you can navigate to the information you need: all blue links are clickable and will bring you to another page inside of this platform. For instance clicking on Photos and videos will jump to this page with photos and videos of the hotel. All blue links with a small arrow will open a new tab in your browser with an internet site outside of this platform: for instance hospitality trends 2015 or more hotel trends in 2015.
Use in all your decisions real sources and benchmarks like:
- hospitality report Deloitte 2015 or an interesting page as well: real statistics of hotels in Europe.An indication for costs on inventory etc. A good starting point is the file estimating hotel costs. Do not focus to much on details. Try to be realistic, but as in reality 'how much does it cost' depend on so many things and is not easy to answer.
The navigation on the lefthand side will always stay visible. By now there is 3,964 pages in this platform, so if you're new, follow the steps preventing you from getting lost.
Always check the news: latest news always on top

Welcome to the platform, all teams in Birmingham!

Your tasks
So what to do first? Perform the tasks below step by step.
In time, the simulation is divided in two parts:
- tasks to be done before the actual game starts on Wednesday Feb 25th;
- tasks to be done during Feb 25th, 26th and 27th – the game days. During these days all team members must be available all of the time.
Your tasks before Wednesday Feb 25th
First check, in six minutes, the main explanation of all of the elements in this simulation :
You will receive team information from your coaches on:
- the team number of your hotel, which is also the username (login name) on this platform. This will look something like 13UK-A02:
- so your competition (13UK is the 13th competition in Birmingham, UK) your team number is, for instance, A02
- so your hotel is located in a city starting with letter A, which is the fictitious city of Amstelburg.
- your hotel is hotel number 02 (out of ten hotels, which are all your competitors).
- you'll get a team password for editing your hotels' team page on this platform. This password will look like ve7r99 and this is case sensitive.
- you'll also get a (secret) hyperlink to your private team sheet (a Google spreadsheet) where you fill out your decisions and where can see your hotel's financial results. This will look like https://www.emeraldforesthotel.com/ve7r99
The example shows the team information from a finished competition in Latvia:
With this information you can start meeting with your team, dividing the tasks, checking out this platform etc. Make sure you have your team well-organised and the tasks well-divided.
Before Wednesday the 25th next tasks must have been finished.
- Task 1: Meet with your team members
Plan meetings with your team to make preparations and plans for who is responsible for what. Managing a hotel is having your team and hotel well-organized!
Check the video with explanations on your competition:
- Task 2: Study E-manual
Study this E-manual: here you will find what you need to read before taking any action.
Login with your username and password.
All team members can log in using the same username: multiple users at the same time with the same username is possible. To just read the content of this platform you don't need to log in at all. If you look for information on any subject, you can search with the search box on the top-righthand corner: click the GO-button for a special page on the searched item, or use the Search button which will show all pages where the search item is mentioned. No answer found? Ask your coaches.
- Task 3: First actions
After reading, discuss your strategic plan with regard to the hotel and come to a conclusion. First, have a look at the example 13UK Example teampage. Then start filling out your own team page: this has to be ready on Wednesday Feb 25th at 16.00. Also, check your private team sheet using your secret hyperlink and fill out your chosen hotelname in the team sheet in cel B1!
A short instruction video on how to edit the team page of your hotel in the Emerald Forest Hotel platform is available. This video is a bit longer, like 10 minutes. But you can skip things or scroll forwards. Open the video (which is on this platform) in a new browser tab: Help on editing your teampage. It takes some time to get grip on this editing. And don't worry, editing your teampage is the only thing which might annoy you because of the unfriendly way it works. All other elements of this simulation are done in Facebook, Google docs and other platforms which are probably much more logical and user friendly :-)
- Task 4: Prepare Trade Fair
In the game week, your hotel will be presenting itself at a Trade Fair on Thursday. So prepare for the Trade Fair: check this page for more information. This is an important fair, which will influence your success in the game. This offers you the opportunity to present your (new ideas on the) hotel. Be creative, and have a look at the pictures of Trade Fairs from earlier competitions. All team members must participate in the Trade Fair.
To make your performance at the Trade Fair as good as possible, your preparations on your teampage must be ready before the start of the Trade Fair. You can do small changes on your team page afterwards on Thursday and even Friday.
Tasks during the game-days: 25th February - 28th. February
- Task 5 to 10
On the page 13UK Tasks and decisions you can find all tasks which are to be done during the game week, day by day.
