Competitions
In the Game, there are two types of competition:
- Business competition: your business achievement, reflected in net profit, added up over the years.
- Creativity competition: based on how your creativity is assessed by your coach. The more creativity points you get, the higher your hotel's rank in this competition.
In the marketplace, there is also fierce competition, check out how to handle this on the competition page.
Every team will always automatically participate in both game competitions.
How is the ranking done?
Your coach evaluates your creativity assignment each round: The average of this mark determines your ranking in the creativity competition. The business mark doesn't affect the creativity competition. The creativity mark, however, does affect the total occupancy, and so the profit and the business competition.
Do you have to compete in the Game?
In the market, you have to compete. Every team will always automatically participate in both competitions (on profit and on creativity): It is up to you if you consider these as a specific goal for your team. Of course, a competition is fun, but some teams choose to run their hotel in a proper way without caring too much about the competitions, which is just fine. Still, of course, you will always have to be competitive and distinguish yourself from competitors. So a fair amount of creativity is always needed.
You can finish the Management Game with good results without winning any competition as long as you meet the requirements set for your Game. And you can do very well in the Game and have a beautiful hotel, a good strategy and a lovely logo etc. and still not be in the top three of your competition and city. So having high quality assignments contributes to your ranking and final mark, but a bad ranking doesn't have to be bad news for your evaluation at all. Your evaluation of the Game as a whole depends on your assignments; an important thing in this is consistency and living up to your strategy. This is evaluated by the marks you get for the assignments.
But, if you are really into competing on creativity, you can do this by trying to be innovative and creative. But don't forget, as stated before: your main task is to keep (make) the hotel financially healthy and to keep it independent anyway.
Creativity competition
The creativity competition means that a ranking is made every round-year per city. Of course, you are not alone! If all teams are very creative, you have to be even more creative to be outstanding and to attract the customer in this way (see the page on competition)! We look at the score per round-year, and there is an overall score as an average over all of the rounds / years.
How to be creative
You can be creative, innovative and can explain this to your coach in the explanation which you give on your assignments / decisions. Each round / year there is a special focus in your assignment.
So what can you do to support this?
Activities on the platform and maybe in your schedule
- It all starts with your strategy, name, logo etc.
- Doing the creativity Assignments (depending on your Game, elements such as a Trade Fair, 3 minutes of fame, a pitch etc.).
- The Hotel itself: the venues. Innovations in and on the product, the distribution etc.
- Activities live: other activities created by you.
- Social media: social media offers all kind of opportunities.
Though, as explained, keep focused on your assignments.
Overall winners creativity in this Game
In the Game, there is no interaction among the cities. Only at the end of the Game, a ranking will be made of all participating hotels in all cities. There will be two overall winners, when benchmarking the best performing hotels;
- one for Business: the team with the highest profit after all the operational years ('total net profit, total of the years').
- one for Creativity: the highest average in creativity after all of the operational years ('after all of the years').
See Key metrics for further explanation.
