Starting position of all hotels
In the Game, you take over the hotel from the Bergman family, specifically Christina Bergman, being the daughter who owns the hotel. As the owner, she will directly address you, although Jill Jandal now is the CEO.
All of you participants make up the new Management Teams of Emerald Forest Hotel. A number of teams, approximately 10, and their hotels, cover one city. At the start of the Game, there are a number of exactly the same hotels with the name Emerald Forest Hotel and the same history. All teams will have the same starting point in all of the cities.
The hotel you take over is in urgent need of new insights into marketing, financial management and communication, so that the next years of operation will be successful, according to the standards set by the new management (your team).
The objectives of the Game are:
- Gaining insight into the complex company situations, which relate to all business units.
- Dealing with decisions which have to be made in uncertain situations, based on incomplete or even conflicting information.
- Learning from other teams in other countries and other situations.
- Anticipating and responding to the market (or changes in the market).
- Being creative and innovative with limited resources.
- Learning to deal with an abundance of information and make a relevant selection.
- Stimulating the sense and mentality of the enterprise.
- Making decisions in a short period of time, under pressure and still focusing on the goals you set .
- Running your own team in an effective way.
- Competing with the other hotels in your city.
Boundaries
As in any simulation, and as in reality (!), there are always boundaries. Your team has to work within these restrictions (like limits on the amounts you are allowed to spend make to prevent you from immediately going bankrupt ). But don't worry there is enough space for creativity!
When making decisions, keep in mind the following concepts:
- Keep the hotel financially healthy.
- Keep the hotel independent, there is enough liquidity for reasonable investments.
- Keep the hotel company owned: No parts of the hotel, grounds or other assets are to be sold, leased out etc.
- All activities should stay related to the markets in the leisure industry and the business market.
- The number of rooms has to remain at 100.
- There are a number of concrete tasks your team must do: The Game will give you specific information on this.
Creativity
There is a fair amount of creativity needed and possible within these boundaries, but stay customer focused!
Every year you have to explain your decisions, so this offers you the possibility to present extra plans or explain things outside of the box. But always be sure to make some realistic calculations and expectations for these plans. As creativity is considered to be an essential element of entrepreneurship, you will get creativity points every year. The numbers of points relates to your position in your city.
